The Jackson-Lincoln Swimming Complex, Quincy’s only nonprofit community pool, was born from the vision of Mr. William "Bill" Black, a dedicated philanthropist who recognized the urgent need for a safe and affordable swimming option in the Northwest Side of Quincy. After witnessing disadvantaged children swimming in the Mississippi River, Mr. Black was moved to create a vital community resource. He envisioned a place where children and families could safely swim, play, and gather—an oasis in an area with limited recreational options.
The Complex is named in honor of Jackson School and Lincoln School, two institutions that once served the Northwest Side of Quincy. In fact, Jackson-Lincoln now sits on the very land that was once home to Jackson School, symbolizing a continued legacy of education and community service in the area.
To bring his vision to life, Mr. Black approached Mr. Ben Bumbry, a longtime Quincy resident, former Alderman, Park District Board Member, Educator, and more. Mr. Bumbry took on the challenge with passion and dedication, becoming the leader who would steer Jackson-Lincoln to success. Bringing his wife, Helen to continue her community mentoring, leadership and so much more to the organization as well. Although Mr. Black passed away before he could see his dream realized, his legacy lived on through the work of Ben & Helen Bumbry.
The Jackson-Lincoln Swimming Complex officially opened on August 2, 1997, with Mr. Bumbry serving as its first Executive Director. For over 20 years, under his leadership, Jackson-Lincoln became more than just a pool—it became a cornerstone of community, health, recreation, and family fun. Mr. & Mrs. Bumbry's mentorship and dedication left an indelible mark on Quincy, and their commitment to this community continues to inspire us all! Helen is still very active with the organization.
For over 27 years, Jackson-Lincoln has operated through community grants and donations, remaining a vital resource thanks to the generosity of those who believe in our mission. As we move forward, we strive to continue this legacy, expanding our services and facilities to meet the evolving needs of our community.
